Suzhou schoolchildren meet the Mayor of Bath

Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 10.22.58A group of young students from Suzhou Foreign Language School, in Suzhou, China, were given a glimpse into a day in the life of the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Andrew Furse, recently.

The students are part of an educational partnership Saint Gregory’s Catholic College has with Suzhou, in China. The College is a member of the Bath-Suzhou Education partnership, set up three years ago to foster links between the two cities, which share International Heritage status, although are in many ways unimaginably different.

Suzhou is a city of 2 million, a burgeoning industrial centre, about two hours from Shanghai, these cities and indeed much of China undergoing rapid economic expansion and change.

Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 10.23.24Each year, the college welcomes around twenty 12-year-old Chinese students for an intensive 12 week visit to the UK, based at St Gregory’s and hosted by families.

The students and their accompanying teachers join our classes and follow a normal UK curriculum. They quickly make friendships and become a welcome part of the school, learning and improving their English language skills as well as being immersed in English home life.

During their visit to the Mayor’s Parlour, the young visitors were given a short talk about the Mayoralty, including dressing up as the Mayor, and heard about the history of some of the beautiful objects in the Mayor’s Parlour.
